Dundalk Young Irelands 1-12 Roche Emmets 0-10

Dundalk Young Irelands came away with a 5 point win at Roche in the Paddy Sheelan Cup. The Irelands started brightly and almost got a goal after just 4 minutes but Kevin Keelan shot at the keeper after a strong run up the field. The Irelands dominated the next 15 minutes racked up 1-4 without reply, including an excellent goal from Mark Savage and a long range point from Barry Piper. Roche did finish the half the stronger and got to within a single goal of the Irelands as they scored 5 points to the Irelands 1 in the last 15 minutes.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 1-05 Roche Emmets 0-05

The Young Irelands started the second half the same as the first and scored 3 frees from Dermot Mone (2) and Savage. Dundalk Young Irelands 0-06 O'Raghallaigh's 1-13

O`Raghallaighs  made  a  flying  start to  their  Div 2  League  campaign  with  a  well  deserved  victory  over  D.Y.I  at  Pairc Eire Og  on  Sunday.  Playing  with  hunger  and  conviction in  the first  half  they  were  leading  by  7  points  before  the  home  team  got off  the  mark . The  visitors  were  faster  to  the  ball  and  made  better  use  of  their  opportunities on  the  day  and  R.Moore  was  accurate  when  he  got  room  to  take  the  many  chances  that  came  his  way.

DYI  were  chasing  the  game  in the second  half  but  a determined  0`Raghallaighs  squad  kept  the  pressure  up  at  all  stages  especially  when  R.Moore  goaled  immediately  after  the  restart .      DYI  scores  came  mainly  from  frees  from D.Maguire  who  was  well  policed  on  the  day  but  their  lethargic  display  did  them  no  favours  against  a  team  who  were  out  for  the  victory.  Both  teams  were  short  a  number  of  regulars due  to  injury   ,  but  the  ORaghallaighs  created  better  scoring  opportunities  and  managed  to  confine  the  Dundalk  squad  well  over  the  hour.

Dundalk Young Irelands 0-07 Sean O’Mahony’s 1-11

The Sean O’Mahony’s came out on top in this Dundalk derby on Sunday morning, beating the Young Irelands by 7 points at Pairc Eire Og.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind, the O’Mahony’s dominated the opening half and led by 4 points to 1 after less than 10 minutes. The Irelands were handed a great chance to level the match when they were awarded a penalty when John Boland was fouled. Boland got up to take the penalty, but saw the O’Mahony’s ‘keeper pull off an excellent save. The O’Mahony’s pushed on and scored 2 more points before Mark Savage pulled a point back for the home side with a free kick. The O’Mahony’s then got the last score of the half with another point to lead by 7 at the break.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-02 Sean O’Mahony’s 1-06

The Young Irelands started the second half in much better fashion and Joseph Flynn scored with 2 free kicks to narrow the gap to 5 points. But their bright start faded and the O’Mahony’s again got a grip of the game and scored 5 unanswered points to seal the victory.  The Young Irelands did battle on and scored the last 3 points of the match in the remaining 10 minutes through Savage, Michael Shields and Nicholas O’Connor.

Best for the Young Irelands were Mark Savage and Andrew Nixon.

Dundalk Young Irelands 2-09 Roche Emmets 2-13

Roche Emmets came away with the two points in this keenly contested match in Louth Division 2 at Roche. It was Roche who started the brighter and opened a 2 point lead inside the 3 minutes. However, the Irelands came back and quick ball into the full forward line and the Roche defence in all sorts of trouble and resulted in the 3 pointed frees for the visiting team (Mone 2 and Maguire 1). Roche regained the lead soon after but it was not long lived as the Irelands equalised with an excellent point from Andrew Nixon about 40 metres out before good play between Johnny Lynch and Derek Maguire saw the Maguire race past the defence and blast to the net. Maguire and Mone both scored a free as the Ireands full forward line again caused serious problems for the Roche defence and the Irelands then led by 5 points coming to half time. However a Barry O’Hare free in injury time narrowed the gap to 4 points at the break.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 1-06 Roche Emmets 0-05

Roche again started the second half brighter and overturned the deficit to actually lead by 2 points midway through the half. The main problem for the turnaround was the Irelands inaccuracy in working the ball out of their own half, which saw them turn over possession often. Roche then got a huge slice of luck when an attempted point dropped over Aaron Conways reach and into the corner of the net and saw the home team 5 points ahead. Despite rallying the Irelands couldn’t get enough points to level the match and even a second Maguire goal with 5 minutes remaining wasn’t enough for the away team who have now lost their opening two league matches.

Best for the Young Irelands were Mark Savage and Andrew Nixon, Simon Flynn and Derek Maguire.

Young Irelands: Aaron Conway; Michael Mone, Simon Flynn, Cian O’Naraigh; Peter Flynn, Aaron Rogers, Robbie Farrell; Andrew Nixon (0-01), Kevin Keelan; Nicholas O’Connor, Johnny Lynch, Joseph Flynn; Dermot Mone (0-04 (4f), Derek Maguire (2-04 (4f), Mark Savage .
Subs: Barry Piper for Joseph Flynn; Gerard Nixon for Peter Flynn; David Lally for Mark Savage.

Dundalk Young Irelands 0-07 Cooley Kickhams 2-08

Cooley defeated the Young Irelands in a closely contested match at Pairc Eire Og. The Young Irelands opened brightly but spurned a number of chances to open the scoring as they dropped two shot into the keeper and also hit a wide. But Cooley regrouped and scored 2 points on the trot from Sean Donnelly and Sean McDonald. Cooley extended their lead further, with a goal from Hanlon. A long ball into the full forward looked innocuous but was misjudged by Ciaran Murray, which allowed the full forward a clean run to goal before rounding the keeper and finishing to the net. The Young Irelands picked themselves up from that set back and increased their workrate and Joe Flynn scored 2 points in a row to bring the Irelands back into the match. The rest of the match was very tight with Aongus McGuinness scoring Cooley’s third point in the 25th minute. As half time approached Cooley grabbed a second goal with Hanlon again capitalising on a defensive error.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-02 Cooley Kickhams 2-03

The Young Irelands closed the gap at the start of the second half with a point from Joe Flynn and two from David Lally. But Cooley responded again with a point from Patrick Sheelan and Michael Rafferty. Both sides continued to match each other for the last ten minutes but it was the two first half goals for Cooley which secured their victory.

Best for Cooley were Sean O’Neill, Richard Brennan and Gavin Long while Simon Flynn, Ciaran Murray and Joseph Flynn tried hard for the Young Irelands.

Dundalk Young Irelands 0-10 St. Marys 0-16

The St. Marys came away with a convincing 6 point victory against the Young Irelands at Pairc Eire Og on Sunday. The result leaves the Young Irelands rooted to the bottom of the table.

The Marys, despite playing into a very strong wind, burst out of the traps and early ball into the forward line resulted in them taking a 3 points to no score lead inside 10 minutes. The Young Irelands got themselves back into the game and scored 2 points in a row from Mark Savage and Joe Flynn. The remainder of the half was very even, with both sides scoring a further 3 points to leave a point between them at the break.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-05 St. Marys 0-06

The Young Irelands opened the scoring with the first attack of the half, when Maguire converted a free kick. However, the Marys upped the tempo and started to dominate around the middle and their straight running and determination in getting to loose balls saw them score 5 points in a row to put a big gap between the teams. Although Maguire converted another free kick, the Marys kicked on again and scored another 4 points in a row, with 3 from Alan Kirk, to seal the victory. The Irelands threw everything at the Marys near the end and Maguire was able to convert another 3 frees but the gap was always too much at that stage and the Marys came away with a deserved victory.

Best for St. Marys were Ronan Carroll, Robbie Leavy, Alan Kirk and Paudy Clarke; while Simon Flynn, Ciaran Murray and Derek Maguire tried hard for the Young Irelands.

Young Irelands: Aaron Conway; Robbie Farrell, Ciaran Murray, Cian O’Naraigh; Peter Flynn, Simon Flynn (0-01, 145’), Michael Mone; Andrew Nixon, Gerard Nixon; Nicholas O’Connor, Johnny Lynch, Kevin Keelan; Mark Savage (0-01), Joseph Flynn (0-02), Derek Maguire (0-06, 6f).
Subs: Peter Nixon for Cian O’Naraigh; Graham Carr for Gerard Nixon; Barry Piper for Nicholas O’Connor.

Dundalk Young Irelands 0-07 St. Mochtas 3-15

St. Mochta’s demolished the Young Irelands in this one sided game in Louth Village. Playing with the aid of the wind, the home side raced into an early 3 point lead. The Irelands rallied briefly with 2 points but the St. Mochtas continued to dominate the possession and quick ball into their full forward line paid dividends as they scored 4 points in a row to extend their lead. The Young Irelands had a good 5 minute spell and Derek Maguire saw his shot well saved by the keeper before they scored 2 points to narrow the deficit. But on 25 minutes the Mochtas again were rewarded with their tactic of playing quick ball to the full forward line as Nigel Farrell tapped the ball past the Irelands keeper. Two points from Eamonn O’Neill closed of the half and effectively the match as a contest.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-04 St. Mochtas1-10

The Mochtas played the second half just as they did the first and scored 2-05, unanswered, inside the opening 15 minutes to give them the overwhelming lead. Although the Young Irelands tried to rally and scored the last 3 points of the match, they had no answer for the Mochtas hunger and more decisive tackling and passing.

Best for the Mochta’s were Declan Byrne, Eamon O’Neill and Nigel Farrell. For the Young Irelands, Graham Carr and Dermot Mone tried hard.

Young Irelands: Aaron Conway; Robbie Farrell, Ciaran Murray, Cian O’Naraigh; Peter Flynn (0-01), Aaron Rogers, Michael Mone; Graham Carr, Joseph Flynn; Dermot Mone, Johnny Lynch (0-01), Nicholas O’Connor; Simon Flynn, Mark Savage,  Derek Maguire (0-03, 2 f).

Dundalk Young Irelands 2-07 Naomh Malachi 1-13

Naomh Malachi’s got all 2 points with a victory against the Dundalk Young Irelands in a wind-swept Courtbane on Sunday afternoon. The home side, playing with the aid of a strong wind, opened the scoring in the first minute with a Jason Clarke point. But the Young Irelands responded well and got 2 points through Derek Maguire free’s. They almost got a goal when Derek Maguire passed to Mark Savage across the ‘square’, but his attempted fist to the net went wide. The Malachi’s took advantage of the wind and with quick ball into the forward line scored 1-05 without reply. The goal from Kevin Rogers was a tame effort that somehow found its way to the net. But 2 minutes later the Irelands got a life-line when Nicholas O’Connor finished off a good move with a cool finish past the keeper. The Malachi’s scored 4 more points, while the Irelands got a Maguire free. But just before half-time, Cian O’Naraigh coolly slotted the ball past the Malachi’s keeper to leave just 4 between the sides at the break.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 2-03 Naomh Malachi 1-10

The second half was a much scrappier affair and it took over 10 minutes for the first score to come, Derek Maguire pointing a free kick. Although the Malachi’s scored 2 more points, through a Jason Clarke free and Jamie Kelly, the Irelands had a great chance to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty. But Niall Bird pulled off a great save to deny Simon Flynn. The Irelands did score 2 more points, while the Malachi’s scored 1 more to run out winners by 3 points.

Overall, the Malachi’s deserved the victory, but neither side look like they will trouble the top teams in this division.

Best for the winners were Jason Clarke, Ronan Greene and Brian Rogers, while Aaron Rogers, Simon Flynn and Graham Carr tried hard for the Young Irelands.

Young Irelands: Aaron Conway; Michael Mone, Ciaran Murray, Graham Carr; Peter Flynn, Aaron Rogers, Robbie Farrell; Joseph Flynn, Kevin Keelan; Nicholas O’Connor (1-00), Johnny Lynch (0-01), Cian O’Naraigh (1-00); Simon Flynn, Derek Maguire (0-06, 6f), Mark Savage.

Dundalk Young Irelands 1-16 Westerns 2-08

The Dundalk Young Irelands clinched the Louth Division 4D with victory over the Westerns in an entertaining match played in excellent conditions in the John Mitchells pitch on Saturday night. The first half was a very scrappy affair with possession hard fought for and few clear chances for either side. There was never much between the sides in the first half and an excellent move, starting from the Irelands defence, ended up with John Boland finishing to the net and this score helped them to lead by 2 points at the break.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 1-04 Westerns 0-05

The Young Irelands dominated the second half and a refocused midfield gave them an excellent platform from which to attack. A run of 7 unanswered points really sealed victory for the Irelanders, with some excellent scores from John Boland and Stephen Lally in particular. The Westerns did manage to grab a goal to bring them into it, when a long ball was missed by the Irelands ‘keeper, who seemed to lose it in the sun. However, the Irelands responded immediately with another point to prevent the Westerns from getting any momentum. The Irelands’ defence then did very well when the Westerns reverted to Plan B and play long ball into the square, although they did get a second goal very late on, but the referee blew the whistle shortly after as the Irelands ran out winners by 5 points.

Best for the Young Irelands were Cian O’Naraigh, Barry Piper and Shane O’Connell.

Young Irelands: Aaron Conway; Ian Campbell, Shane O’Connell, Joe McGrath; Michael Mone, Cian O’Naraigh, Peter McCourt; Alan Haughey, Barry Piper (0-02); Stephen Lally (0-05), Michael Shields (0-01), Anton Hande; Ryan Whyte (0-02), John Boland (1-03), Stephen Coburn.

Dundalk Young Irelands 1-07 Dundalk Gaels 0-16

Dundalk Gaels defeated the Young Irelands in this entertaining local derby at the Upper Marshes on Friday night. The first half was a very tight contest as both sides had to fight hard for possession. The Gaels had the better early chances with a tactic of playing early ball into Derek Crilly, playing full-forward. Although he score 2 well taken points early on, he was well marshalled by the Irelands defence, who didn’t give the Gaels forward line much space throughout. Points from Derek Maguire drew the Irelands level, however both sides continued to trade scores in a fast moving first half. A well taken goal from John Boland put the Irelands into a 2 point lead towards the end of the half, but the Gaels continued to press and equalised coming into the break. Indeed the Young Irelands, could have been ahead as Graham Carr saw his goal attempt saved by Stephen Faulkner in the Gaels goals.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 1-04 Dundalk Gael 0-07

The Gaels had the better of the second half as their tactic of going for points, rather than goals paid off. Indeed they outscored the Irelands by 9-3. The Gaels, got a number of their second half scores from breakaways following some Young Irelands’ attacks breaking down. They ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Best for the Gaels were Sean McCann, Jamie Faulkner and Derek Crilly. Peter Nixon, Graham Carr and Derek Maguire were the best performers for the Young Irelands.

Young Irelands: Aaron Conway; Ciaran Murray, Peter Nixon, Graham Carr; Cian O’Naraigh; Peter Flynn, Robbie Farrell; Kevin Keelan (0-01), Aaron Roger; Simon Flynn, Johnny Lynch, Sean Laverty; John Boland (1-01), Mark Savage,  Derek Maguire (0-05).

Dundalk Young Irelands 0-08 Geraldines 2-07

The Geraldines defeated the Dundalk Young Irelands on a very wet night in Pairc Eire Og, and in the process, condemned the Dundalk team to Division 3 football next season.

After a closely contested opening quarter, the game turned when the Geraldines pounced for two goals. Jim McEneaney scored the first following a good break in the 23rd minute. In the 30th minute the Gers took a firm grip on the game when James Craven struck a second goal to put his side 2-5 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-03 Geraldines 2-05

The result was never in doubt after that and although the Young Irelands battled gamely in difficult conditions, they never looked like rescuing the game and their over-reliance on scores from Derek Maguire proved costly.
