Half-time: Young Irelands 2-03 O'Mahony's 1-07 Ireland’s had to do without Andrew Nixon in the second half as he required stiches following an off-the ball strike at the end of the first half. However, Joseph Flynn did well when moved into the middle. The O’Mahony’s went four points clear in the second half before the Irelands came back into it towards the fourth quarter. In fact Young Irelands could have won the match as they scored a goal from Mark Savage and three points from Shane Greene, David Lally and John Lynch to lead by a point with just minutes remaining. The Nicks raced into an early 3 point lead through points from Keith Arnold, including one from a free. Young Ireland's responded with two from Derek Rogers and Mark Savage before the Nicks scored two points from a Paddy O'Boyle 45' and a score from Dale Thornton. However, Young Ireland's went into the break with a one point lead after a score from Conor Nixon then a fisted goal from Dermot Mone. Half-time: St. Nicholas 0-05 Young Irelands 1-03 Two points from the Nicks no.21, which were split by a Derek MaGuire point saw the Nicks draw level. Three unanswered points from Patrick Murtagh saw the Nicks go into a three point lead. Young Ireland's playing into the wind, opened the scoring with an early goal from Johnny Lynch following a flick from Mark Savage. Young Ireland's scored another point before the Fechin's responded with two Ronan Holcroft free's from close in. Ireland's scored another point but Fechin's hit back with a couple of points before Dermot Mone expertly finished off a great move from Ireland's forward line to go into half time leading by two points. Half-time: Young Irelands 2-02 St. Fechin's 0-06 Playing with the aid of a slight breeze, Young Ireland's upped the tempo in the second half and Fechin's simply couldn't keep in touch. After scoring two more goals with a few points, Fechin's then had a defender sent off for striking out on Ireland's half back Peter Flynn. Young Ireland's ruthlessly took advantage of the extra man and attacked with purpose at every opportunity and played some excellent football, particularly in the second half. Brother's Gerard and Peter Nixon won the crucial midfield battle, while full back Graham Carr excelled in the game. The pace and skill of the forwards left St. Fechin's chasing shadows for most of the match. This win set up Young Ireland's for another assault at the Division 3 League, but they will need to bring this intensity and attitude into every match to go all the way. Dundalk Young Irelands: Kevin Keelan, Robbie Farrell, Graham Carr, Shane O'Connell, Simon Flynn , Aaron Rogers, Peter Flynn, Peter Nixon, Gerard Nixon, Conor Nixon (0-02), Derek MaGuire (1-06,2f), Michael Shields, Dermot Mone (2,-0), Mark Savage (1-0), Johnny Lynch (1-0). Louth Football League Division 3 Date: Sunday 26th April, 2009 Venue Pairc Naoimh Bird, Dowdalshill Time: 15.00 Referee: Seamus Thornton Dowdalshill 1-08 Dundalk Young Irelands 2-10 . Dundalk Young Ireland's overcame a tough test from Dowdalshill at Pair Naoimh Bird on Sunday. Young Ireland's, playing into the wind, opened the scoring with a pointed free from Derek Maguire. The first half was a tight affair, with the ref seeming to penalise players to quickly, which only helped to prevent a free-flowing game. A couple of points were then exchanged between the teams before Maguire goaled for the Ireland's. The Ireland's missed a number of scoring chances in the first half as the sides went into the break with Young Ireland's a point to the good. Half-time: Dowdalshill 0-05 Young Ireland's 1-03 The second half started as the first half ended with the game being broken up by the whistle. There was nothing between the sides, however the Hill then took the lead for the first time mid-way through the half after Donal Sheridan scored a goal from the edge of the square following a breaking ball in front of goal. The Ireland's responded positively and Maguire goaled again to give the lead back to the Ireland's. A melee involving most players towards the end of the match seemed to fire up the ireland's who dominated from there untill the end of the half and finally played their best football of the match with good ball into the forwards who were often fouled by the Dowdalshill backs. A well worked point, which was finished off by Conor Nixon and some free's from Dowdalshill helped Young Ireland's to victory on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-08 Dundalk Young Irelands: Kevin Keelan, Robbie Farrell, Graham Carr, Shane O'Connell, Simon Flynn , Aaron Rogers, Peter Flynn, Peter Nixon, Gerard Nixon, Conor Nixon (0-02), Derek MaGuire (2-06,6f), Michael Shields, David Bailey, Mark Savage, Johnny Lynch. After a cautious opening five minutes from both sides Young Ireland's then got into their rhythm with some good passing and tanacious and consistant tackling, from the full forward line right back to the full back line. They opened up an early 5 point to no score lead with 4 points from the very impressive Derek Maguire (1f) and one from Johnny Lynch. The match got a bit scrappy after that and the O'Raghallaigh's kicked 6 wides as a result of excellent pressure play from the Ireland's before they got their first score of the half from the corner forward Darren Boyle. Young Ireland's responded with a point a piece from Maguire and Peter Nixon. Nixon's was probably the point of the match with some excellent short passing out of the defence before Nixon received it on the halfway. He then ran through the defence before kicking over the bar from about 25 metres out. The O'Raghallaigh's closed the half with a point to trail by 5 at the break. Half-time: Young Irelands 0-07 O'Raghallaigh's 0-02 An injury to Mark Savage towards the end of the first half meant that Joesph Flynn had to come in for his championship debut for the Irelander's. And as expected the O'Raghallaigh's started brightly in the second half however the tough and consistant tackling from the Irelander's prevented them from scoring early on. The Irelander's responded with 2 points from Maguire (1f) and a further point from full forward Johnny Lynch. At this stage O'Raghallaigh's had kicked 9 wides compared to just 3 from the Irelander's. The O'Raghallaigh's best spell of the match was in the middle of the second period when they scored 3 points to 1 however, the strong defensive play from the Irelander's ensured that they never got the goal that they required to get themn back into contention. The Irelander's finished the match very strongly with 3 points including an attempted lob from Johnny Lynch following a mix up in the O'Raghallaigh's defence left the goalkeeper stranded away from his goal. The Irelander's can take great encouragement from this display and puts them in the reckoning for qualification from the group if they can maintain this strong form and fitness. While everybody on the Irelander's team played very well, young Nicholas O'Connor stood out around the middle with Peter Nixon, as did Ciaran Murray who made his championship debut in the defence. Dundalk Young Irelands: Tom O'Connor, Ciaran Murray, Graham Carr, Simon Flynn, Robbie Farrell, Aaron Rogers, Peter Flynn, Peter Nixon (0-01), Gerard Nixon, Conor Nixon (0-01), Derek Maguire (0-08, 3f), Nicholas O'Connor, Dermot Mone, Johnny Lynch (0-04), Mark Savage. First Half The Plunkets got off to a slightly better start when they had a free kick and a shot from play go wide in the opening minutes. Young Irelands responded and got off the mark in the fifth minute when Mark Savage passed the ball to Conor Nixon for the first score of the game. Another score by the Young Irelands followed when a Kevin Keelen save was worked up the field and slotted over by Derek Maguire 0-02 0-0. It wasn't until the 12th minute before the Plunkets opened their accocunts with a well taken point from their centre forward. The Young Irelands players kept the pressure on the Plunkets which resulted in them kicking their 6th wide in the 25th minute. A few minutes later another save from Kevin Keelan resulted in the ball being worked from defence up through the mid field with Peter Nixon and Johnny Lynch trading passes before Aaron Rogers scored. An intercepted pass from Peter Flynn left the Ireland's defence exposed, which resulted in the Plunket's No.10 smashing the ball into the net. The Ireland's responded well by scoring a point on the stroke of half time. Half time score: Dundalk Young Ireland's 0-08 Oliver Plunkets 1-03 Second Half A good start to the second half saw Gerard Nixon win possession; he then passed to Aaron Rogers who sent it into the forwards which resulted in a free. The free was then camly knocked over by Derek Maguire. Slack marking from the Young Irelands defence nearly resulted in goal no.2 for the Plunkets but some good covering by Robbie Farrell cleared the danger. Plunkets midfield were just edging it with some good catching from the kickouts, which resulted in the Plunkets have the better of the first ten minutes of the second half but the Irelanders held firm, which resulted in the Plunkets not scoring but hitting a couple of wides. A great score followed for the Young Irelands as Nicholas O'Connor sent a long ball into Mark Savage who laid off to Derek Maguire who scored. The Plunkets were clearly rattled and an off the ball strike by their No.8 resulted in a skirmish by both teams. Subsequently the no.8 was booked and lucky not to be sent off. Both sides were reduced to 14 men a few minutes later when Andrew Nixon and the Plunkets centre half back both received red cards for striking after a scuffle involving a number of players. Peter Nixon then ran through the midfield to slot over a few minutes later. Another good ball into the forwards seen Mark Savage rounding his defenders to set up Johnny Lynch for the Irelanders first goal of the game with ten minutes left in the second half. The victory was sealed for the Young Irelands when substitute Joesph Flynn collected a pass from Derek Maguire who ran all of fourty yards to cooly finish past the Plunkets keeper for the Irelanders second goal with only a few minutes remaining. The Plunkets got a consolation goal with one minute left when when the no.9 blasted into the top corner from 20 yards out. Final Score: Dundalk Young Irelands 2-11 Oliver Plunkets 2-03 Dundalk Young Irelands: Kevin Keelan, Ciaran Murray, Graham Carr, Simon Flynn, Robbie Farrell, Aaron Rogers (0-01), Peter Flynn, Peter Nixon (0-01), Gerry Nixon, Conor Nixon (0-02), Derek Maguire (0-04), Nicholas O'Connor, Dermot Mone (0-02), Johnny Lynch (1-01), Mark Savage: Subs: Andrew Nixon for Gerry Nixon, Joesph Flynn (1-0) for Conor Nixon Louth Football League Division 3 Date: Friday 19th June, 2009 Venue Philipstown Time: 19:30 Referee: Gabriel McKennyl St Kevins 0-05 Dundalk Young Irelands 1-11 Dundalk Young Ireland's comfortably overcame the challenge of St Kevin's in a scrappy game in Philipstown on Friday evening. The Kevin's started the game brightly and took the lead after David Smith pointed for the home side. The Irelander's had made a poor enough start to the match with some poor handling at crucial times. However, they got their running game going midway through the half and scored 5 unanswered points and grabbed a lead that they never looked like losing. in fact they had a couple of half chances at goal following strong runs from midfield from Peter Nixon, however they didn't come off. Liam Boylan then grabbed a point for the Kevin's to close the gap to three points. The Irelander's responded brightly with a pointed free from Derek Maguire before the same player goaled near the end of the half. There was a break in play as Aaron Rogers was struck off the ball and required treatment. Half-time: St Kevin's 0-02 Young Ireland's 1-05 Both teams hit wides at the start of the second half before Maguire scored from a free for the Irelands. The impressive Liam Boylan got two points in a row for the Kevin's (1f) but the Irelanders came back strongly with points from Sean Rafferty and Maguire. The Kevin's seemed to run out of steam in the final quarter and although Boylan got another point for them, the Irelander's finished very strobgly and got 2 more points from Nicholas O'Connor and Connor McCrory. The Irelander's will be very happy to come away from Philipstown with the points and stay on top of the league, especially considering the fact they were missing a number of players for the match. Best for the irelanders were Michael Mone at wing back and Michael Shields at wing forward, while Liam Boylan stood out for the Kevin's. Dundalk Young Irelands: Kevin Keelan, Ciaran Murray, Graham Carr, Robbie Farrell, Peter Flynn , Aaron Rogers, Michael Mone, Peter Nixon (0-03), Sean Rafferty (0-01), Michael Shields, Derek Maguire (1-05, 4f), Nicholas O'Connor (0-01), Dermot Mone (0-01), Conor McCrory (0-01), John Boland. This was a very tight match from start to finish, closer than the scoreline would suggest. The teams swapped the first 8 points of the match as it was level at 0-04 each after 25 minutes. However, a goal from Derek Maguire near the end of the half put the Irelanders into the lead. A point a-piece made the score 1-05 to 0-06 going into the break. In injury time Tom Staunton and Gerard Nixon clashed off the ball and both players received a straight red card. Half time score: Dundalk Young Ireland's 1-05 Oliver Plunkets 0-06 The Clans opened the second half excellently and Quigley scored a good goal to give them the lead. The Irelanders got down the other end of the field straight away and Peter Flynn was fouled when in on goal to earn a penalty. However, Maguire put the penalty over the bar to reduce the deficit. Irelander's upped the tempo again and an excellent point from Peter Nixon, following a strong run from midfield helped the Irelanders into the lead 1-10 to 1-08. The Clans then got a controversial goal after Tom O'Connor appeared to be fouled when trying to come out of his goal. But the referee didnt't give the free and Paddy McEnenaney scored from 2 yards after the ball broke to him. Both sides scored a couple of points towards the end to keep it tight coming towards the last few minutes. However, with the Irelanders searching for an equaliser, the Clans broke to grab the winning goal. While the win puts the Clans on top of the group and into the quarter finals, the Irelanders will have to regroup and overcome the Malachi's and the Joe's in their remaining matches. However, they can take comfort from another strong display in this match, in which they were unlucky at times. Wolf Tones started the brighter of the two teams and went into the lead when they scored a goal following a mix up in the Irelanders defence. The Irelanders started to get ino their stride midway through the half and got into a lead that they never looked like giving up with a goal from Derek Maguire. Half-time: Wolf Tones 1-0 Young Ireland's 1-04 The second half continued where the first finished with the Irelands remaining on top. John Boland tucked away an early penalty after Conor Nixon was fouled when in on goal, following a well-worked move. Dermot Mone netted late on to put some gloss on the result. The game on a whole was more even than the scoreline would suggest with the Irelands particularly wasteful in possession on too many occaisions and they will have to improve considerably on this performance for the Championship match on Saturday evening and the remaining league games. Best for the irelanders was Johnny Lynch while Jamie O'Hanrahan at corner back also done well. Dundalk Young Irelands: Kevin Keelan, Ciaran Murray, Graham Carr, Jamie O'Hanrahan, Michael Mone, Peter Flynn, Robbie Farrell, Nicholas O'Connor, Joseph Flynn, Conor McCrory, Johnny Lynch (0-05), Derek Maguire (1-02,2f), David Bailey (0-01), John Boland (1-00,P), Conor Nixon. With the Irelanders looking for a victory that would keep them on course for the league title and Glen Emmets looking for a win and a place in the promotion play-off a tight battle was always on the cards in front of a big crowd. Unfortunately the first half proved to be a scrappy affair with too many frees being awarded against both sides preventing a free-flowing match. Although Derek Maguire got the opening point of the match, it was the Emmet’s who started the brighter and they the next two points. The Ireland’s were in a determined mood and equalised soon after. But it was the Glen Emmets who continued to impress in the first and they took the lead twice during the half with the Irelands equalising each time. However, but for some poor shooting in front of goal the Ireland’s could actually have gone in to the break in the lead. Half-Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-03, Glen Emmets 0-03 After a strong half time team talk the Irelanders burst out of the traps in the second half and started to play a much better brand of football. Some quick passing put young Dermot Mone in for a very well taken opening goal early in the second half. That vital score seemed to settle the Irelanders and this was followed by a brilliant goal from Joseph Flynn following a strong run from the middle of the park from Peter Nixon. That goal effectively killed the match off as it gave the Irelanders a 6-point lead. Although the Glen Emmets responded gamely they could never get closer than 4 points to the Irelanders who held on to win by 5 points. Next up for the Irelanders is a top of the table clash away to Lanleire on Saturday evening. A win there will seal the league for the Irelanders. However, defeat could give Lanleire the advantage going into the last round of games. Best for the Irelanders on the night were Ciaran Murray and Peter Nixon. Dundalk Young Irelands: Craig McKenna; Ciaran Murray, Graham Carr, Robbie Farrell; Michael Mone, Aaron Rogers, Peter Flynn; Peter Nixon, Gerard Nixon; Nicholas O’Connor (0-01), Derek Maguire (0-05), Johnny Lynch (0-01); Dermot Mone (1-01), Conor McCrory, Joseph Flynn (1-00). The Young Irelands got off to the perfect start with an excellent goal in the first minute from Peter Nixon following a strong run through the Lanleire half of the field before firing to the corner of the net. Although Lanleire got the next point, the Irelanders increased their advantage when Johnny Lynch managed to lob the ‘keeper from 20 yards out to make the score 0-00 to 2-00 after 14 minutes. Both sides then traded points with 2 each for Dermot Mone for the Irelanders and Nicky Malone (2) and Martin Farrelly (3) for Lanleire making it 2-2 to 0-5 heading towards the break. The Young Irelands had their goalkeeper sent off in injury time following an off-the-ball incident. Half Time: Lanleire 0-05 Dundalk Young Irelands 2-04
It was the Irelanders who started brightest in the second half and Derek Maguire grabbed a point in the 33rd minute to extend their lead. However, Lanleire used their man advantage wisely and grabbed 1-02 unanswered to leave the minimum between the sides. Maguire again extended the lead with a free for the Irelanders on 43 minutes. However, again Lanleire responded and scored the next two points to bring the match level with around 10 minutes to go. But, credit must go to the Irelanders. Despite being down a man they never stopped battling and trying to play football and finished the match the stronger of the two sides. In fact they grabbed the last two points of the match with a free from Maguire on 59 minutes and a point from Nicholas O’Connor in the last minute to seal a memorable win and the league title. In an exciting match of football Derek Maguire and Graham Carr stood out for the Irelanders while Lanleire were best served by Martin Farrelly and Nicly Malone. The Young Irelands burst out of the traps and built up a big lead with points from Maguire and an excellent long-range point from Conor McCrory from 45 metres out. Half Time: Dundalk Young Irelands 0-06 Stabannon Parnells 0-05 The Irelanders got the opening point of the second half to stretch the lead to 2. Once again Stabannon battled back and actually drew level mid-way through the half. But they could not push on and take the lead. After the match, Secretary of the County Board – Pat Hamilton, presented the Division 3 McArdle Cup to Dundalk Young Irelands captain Aaron Rogers.
